The Chair of Bishton Community Council (Councillor Mike Hillman) was recently pleased to accept an invitation from Magor With Undy Community Council to attend the Re-Dedication of the Magor War Memorial following an extensive period of renovation. The service took place in Magor Square at 10.30am on 21st September 2019 hosted by Councillor Sally Bailey, Chair of Magor With Undy Community Council and in the presence of invited dignitaries and members of the public.
The ceremony took place in glorious sunshine and hymns were sung by the Serenata Choir, accompanied by the Severn Tunnel Band. The address was given HM Lord-Lieutenant of Gwent, Brigadier Robert Aitken CBE. During the ceremony a wreath was laid by Councillor Geoff Cook (Vice Chair) on behalf of the communities of Magor, Undy, Llandevenny, Penhow, Redwick, Landevaud, Wilcrick, Bishton and St. Brides.
Engraved on the memorial are the names of three men from the village of Bishton who were killed during the First World War; George James, Edgar Morgan and Francis Williams who all attended Bishton School, which is now Bishton Village Hall. A plaque honouring these men also hangs in Bishton Village Hall.
The following photographs show Councillors Mike Hillman and Anke Hillman speaking to the Rev Canon Jeremy Harris who carried out the service, and Councillor Mike Hillman standing in front of the renovated War Memorial.
